What is...

pub insurance?

When you’re pulling pints and serving merry customers, the last thing you want is something to go wrong, like a fire or a serious accident. But when you’re trading with the public, and there is alcohol involved, you’re going to run into some risks.

Someone might smash a glass and badly injure another customer, or you might get flooded and have to stop trading and close - whatever the risks, you can’t eliminate them completely. Pub business insurance is designed to help protect pubs from risks, providing tailored cover to help keep your premises, staff and customers safe while ensuring your business can continue running smoothly.

Having sufficient insurance for pubs could help protect against unforeseen events and provide a financial safety net, giving you peace of mind so you can focus on what’s most important — getting the customers in.

Why do pubs need insurance?

When you’re serving alcohol in a busy pub, you might run into some risks. Pub business insurance could help protect you from a wide range of risks, including the following:

  • A customer slips and falls
  • A fire breaks out, causing damages
  • A staff member gets injured at work
  • Someone sues over food poisoning
  • Your pub is broken into, and cash and stock are stolen
  • A customer damages your property

What types of public houses can be covered?

At Bionic, we help arrange insurance for various types of public houses, including:

  • Gastropubs
  • Country pubs
  • Micropubs

How much does pub insurance cover cost?

Prices could start from around £2.01 per day*.

Your pub insurance average cost will vary depending on several factors, including: where your business is located, the cover you take out and your claims history. Get in touch with a member of our insurance team to find out how much you’re looking to pay for annual pub insurance.

*This price is for a pub customer – 10% of customers who were sold with one of our panel providers paid £733.17 or less annually (excluding any additional administration fees) between 01/01/25 & 31/12/2025. Equivalent to £61.10 a month or £2.01 a day (and excludes the extra costs for paying monthly). Your actual policy and price may vary depending on your business requirements.

How could you reduce pub insurance costs?

Small business owners understand that the right insurance is an essential part of running a business, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or overly expensive. Here are some practical ways to help protect your premises and potentially lower your business insurance costs:

  • Demonstrate good risk management - Showing insurers that you actively identify, assess and reduce potential risks could impact your premiums. This includes maintaining high hygiene standards and keeping your pub’s equipment and building in good condition.
  • Strengthen health and safety practices - Improving health and safety procedures could reduce the chance of accidents or injuries on your premises, which could lead to fewer claims.
  • Invest in security - Adding security measures like CCTV, alarm systems, secure locks or better lighting could lower the risk of theft or vandalism. A more secure pub could be seen as lower risk, which could help bring insurance costs down.
  • Compare insurance quotes each year - Shopping around ensures you’re not paying more than you need to. Bionic can help you compare pub insurance quotes from different insurers, so you can find the best option for the level of cover you require.

What is loss of license insurance?

Loss of license insurance protects your business if you sell alcohol and your license is revoked for reasons beyond your control, like crime or disorder on your premises.

  • It will help protect against loss of income due to your alcohol license being revoked.
  • It’ll help cover costs and expenses incurred through the process of appealing the loss of license.
